They could hardly be more different: the urban Sitterwerk near St. Gallen, and the rural, remote Tessanda Val Müstair. Yet these two foundations come under the same heading. “Living cultural heritage” is the theme of this year’s Pro Patria stamps. The Sitterwerk Foundation has created an institution on the site of a former dyeing factory in the Sitter Valley near St. Gallen, where artists, craftspeople, scientists and members of the general public come together. Facilities include the Art Library, the Materials Archive and the Studio House. In the neighbouring Art Foundry, photo lab and the institutions of the Sitterwerk itself, production, research, conservation, presentation and the mediation of arts and crafts pervade and enrich one another. The Manufactura Tessanda Val Müstair Foundation runs one of Switzerland’s last three professional hand weaving operations. It is a traditional business that was founded in Santa Maria in 1928. In this factory, weaving is carried out only by hand and usually on 100-year-old looms. It produces both functional items and fashionable accessories from natural raw yarns, such as linen, cotton, wool, cashmere, silk and hemp.
