When monks arrived in this region in the High Middle Ages, it is said that they were greeted by singing angels. This is where Engelberg Monastery, founded in 1120, and the nearby town get their name. The prominent mountain, where the singing was heard, is now called Hahnen and is Engelberg’s local mountain. Ever since it was founded, the Benedictine monastery has shaped the history of the high valley. Following the founding of the Engelberg writing school in the mid-1100s, it has played a leading role in education, and today, it has its own training campus. The current monastery building was built after its third fire in 1729 and is one of the largest baroque buildings in Central Switzerland. The monastery’s church is in fact also a parish church. In the western gallery, you will find the organ. With its 9097 pipes distributed across 137 stops, it is the largest organ in Switzerland and one of the largest in the world.
