26 years after being designated capital of the Olympic movement, Lausanne
itself is to become an Olympic city. From 9 to 22 January 2020, it will host the
third Winter Youth Olympics, the second biggest winter multisport event. At the heart of the Games are the Olympic
values: excellence (outstanding sporting
performance), respect (for other people and the environment) and friendship (cultural exchange). But Swissness also plays a major role. Gender equality and sustainability will also be exemplified. The new development for the Olympic village will become the VORTEX student accommodation after the Games, and the Vaudoise Arena, the new multisport facility at Espace Malley, was already planned long beforehand and will
continue to be used afterwards.
